“I felt I’d better explain this one! Where did the very random name of Wrinkly Pepper come from? Well…It’s not as random as it might seem. A while back I was studying at university when I fell ill. My health gradually deteriorated and I had to withdraw from my Arts Management degree. I felt miserable as I couldn’t study, couldn’t go out and socialise and felt sick every time I ate. Things got so bad that I became petrified of food. Every time I ate something it seemed to make me feel even worse and there were only a handful of vegetables I felt I could befriend. I remember opening the fridge one day to be greeted by an abundance of food – almost all of which I was too scared to eat. The only thing in there that I felt safe enough to eat was an old wrinkly red pepper. I looked at the pepper, it looked at me, and I remember thinking ‘Has my life come to this – a wrinkly pepper?’
I haven’t forgotten how hopeless things seemed back then and that moment with the pepper seemed quite poignant – and that’s where the name ‘Wrinkly Pepper’ came from”.
Chris Maddison.

Food Intolerance and Food Allergy are quite different from each other yet they always seem to be stuck together in the media. We found this very confusing and our poor little brains couldn’t take it anymore. So, armed with lots of ideas and a wrinkly pepper, we decided to unstick the two conditions and give food intolerance and its sufferers the recognition, help and support they deserve – and WrinklyPepper.com was born!
We have first hand experience of what it’s like to suffer from food related illnesses and we decided we wanted to help people avoid the minefield of controversy that exists between them and the information, support and professionals that can really help.
We’re far from perfect but we’re always working hard on making things better. Our core goals are:
To provide an up-to-date, accurate and engaging web resource which brings all relevant information and news to the forefront to enable you to make more informed decisions about your health. There’s just so much information out there about food intolerance, allergy, nutrition etc. Sometimes it’s really hard to find accurate and reliable information and even harder to understand it! We work alongside a growing number of healthcare professionals to try and help detangle this mishmash of information and make it easier for everyone to understand.
To clear up the confusion between Allergy and Intolerance and give Food Intolerance, and those who suffer from it, the support and recognition they deserve. We noticed how often food allergy is discussed in the media and how food intolerance is often nothing more than a side note, despite the fact it affects increasing numbers of the population. We’re working our socks off to both further the understating of food intolerance and its recognition in media and medical circles.
To provide an easily accessible web-based community and social network for everyone with an interest in food intolerances, food related illnesses and Nutritional Therapy. Being ill and thinking you’re the only one can make you feel pretty lonely and isolated, that’s why we encourage everyone (including Nutritional Therapists) to participate in the WrinklyCommunity and share their experiences and knowledge.
To help reduce the time it takes for a professional diagnosis to be made. There are many scientific tests out there with the power to uncover all manner of health problems, many of which are not offered by the NHS, but sifting through all the medical jargon and scientific terms to find the right one for you can be a bit of a nightmare. We help to put you in touch with the testing services and practitioners who really have the power and expertise to help you achieve optimum health and nutrition.
To help you find a practitioner with the necessary qualifications to help you. While many people are sympathetic to the difficulties faced by those who suffer from food intolerance and food related illnesses, sadly there are always a few people who attempt to cash-in on other people’s misfortune. The unregulated sanctity of the internet is the perfect place for such people to offer ‘miracle cures’ and dazzle you with the jumble of letters after their name but knowing what their qualifications really mean is often very difficult. That’s why we try to help make sense of medical/complementary titles and bring you the services of professional laboratories and practitioners who have recognised qualifications and answer to a regulatory body.
To put the internet to good use! When we first began researching food intolerance and nutrition on the internet we soon realised that there was very little in the way of comprehensive information out there. There are many fantastic practitioners up and down the country who help food intolerance sufferers every day and we thought we’d help you find them, and them find you by providing a snazzy little website for everyone to get acquainted.
To bring support to you! Not every one lives in a busy town or city with lots of different health clinics and health food shops to chose from which can make finding the help and support you need very difficult. We are constantly encouraging more and more Nutritional Therapists to join the WrinklyPepper Directory so we can bring their expertise right to you in your local area. If you’re desperate to find a Nutritional Therapist in your local area but aren’t having much luck then let us know and we will do our very best to try and find one for you! With the birth of WrinklyStore.com we’re also able to bring the specialist supplements and laboratory tests right to your door – even if you live in a remote corner of nowhere with only a cabbage patch and a few sheep for company!
